A story from Hearts in Motion (HIM), a organization with the mission of changing lives in Guatemala:

In 2004, HIM was performing a free medical clinic in Gualan, Guatemala.  After seeing nearly 300 people, we were getting ready to close the door when a young father walked in carrying his 13 year old daughter who was too weak to walk. The entire team stood shocked as he unwrapped his 23 lb daughter, Hilda, a living skeleton. When I asked why they had waited so long to get help for their daughter, why they had not gone by bus to the hospital 2.5 hours away, they looked at me like I had two heads.  That ride, they explained, would have cost $2.75.  They had 8 other children who would go without food if they spent that money on one child.
