health systems and health care services

In Guatemala, healthcare is free and universal as provided by its government (USAID, 2018).  However, lack of infrastructure, personnel and inadequate supplies make obtaining healthcare a challenge (USAID, 2018).  Additionally, there are only 0.93 doctors per 1,000 residents in Guatemala, with an even lower rate in rural areas (CDC, 2017).  It also must be shown that Guatemala’s health care is more focused on treating diseases rather than preventing them (USAID, 2018).  Even though healthcare is free and universal in Guatemala, there is still a cost associated with obtaining these services (transportation, lost wages) that many are unable to bear the cost of.
